Nicola Gaffney, BBAThis semester, our learning pod created a Community Action Project we called “Y.O.V.O.: You Only Vote Once *per election “. We connected with students on campus to discuss the upcoming election, answer any questions they may have (to the best of our ability), and get them registered to vote (or confirm if they already are). With the upcoming federal election, this project is relevant and important to Nanaimo and also across the country. In the previous election only 38.8% of 18-24 year old’s voted and our goal is to increase that percentage. Our intention is to stress the importance of every vote; if young people are least likely to vote, political parties don’t have much incentive to make efforts to appeal to them. We created and advertised our website which we hope can assist young people in the voting process and inform them about each party from a non-biased stance. I learned a lot through our CAP process and will continue to encourage other young people to get registered and make an informed vote now that I realize how important each vote really is.
